What Happens If You Miss a Dose or Run Out
Missing a dose or running out of medication temporarily happens. Here's how to handle it safely and what to expect when you restart.
If You Miss a Single Dose
GLP-1 injections (like semaglutide and tirzepatide) are typically given weekly. If you miss a dose:
Take it as soon as you remember if it's been fewer than 5 days since your scheduled injection
If it's been more than 5 days, skip the missed dose and resume your regular schedule
Do not double up doses to compensate for a missed one
When in doubt, contact your clinical team through your patient portal for guidance specific to your medication and schedule.
If You Run Out of Medication
If you've run out of medication while waiting for your refill to arrive, contact the clinical team through your message center. They can advise on how to proceed based on your specific situation.
After a Gap in Treatment
If you've gone several weeks or more without taking your medication, do not assume you can restart at your previous dose. After a significant gap:
Your provider may recommend restarting at a lower dose to reduce side effects
Your body's tolerance has reset somewhat during the gap
Starting back at a high dose after a break increases the risk of nausea, vomiting, and other GI side effects
When reordering after a gap, let your provider know how long it has been since your last dose. Provide this information in the medical questionnaire or by messaging the clinical team before you reorder. Your provider will determine the appropriate starting dose.
How to Avoid Gaps
The best way to avoid running out of medication is to reorder early. We recommend placing your next order approximately 20 days after your last order. This accounts for provider review, pharmacy processing, and shipping time so your next supply arrives before you run out.
Prescription Expiration
If you've gone an extended period without ordering, your prescription may have expired. In that case, you'll need to complete a new intake questionnaire so a provider can re-evaluate your eligibility and set an appropriate starting dose for your restart.
